Business Analysis Webinars for November 2016 - Part II

Using Design Thinking to Create a Design Thinking Program to Teach Principles of Design Thinking
Presented by Tim Kramer

This presentation is about (as if it's not obvious) Design Thinking and how it can be used within your organization. In this presentation, Tim discusses at a high level what his organization went through when starting a Design Thinking program and what some of the main challenges were. Tim then moves on to discuss how the organization overcame those challenges and how a "grass roots" approach worked to gain traction for bringing Design Thinking back to life. Tim will also provide specific details about how his organization used Design Thinking principles to start their program-- focusing on the most common areas of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.  He will then go in to how each of the main focus areas where decomposed, in order to apply the principles when engaging customers.

While Design Thinking seems to be more and more popular, there is still a gap in how organizations can apply these fundamentals within their current processes. Tim started a small team of Design Thinking Evangelists within his company in order to educate others, build skill sets and provide greater value to the organization.

The Lean Enterprise: Intro to Massively Disruptive Innovation
Presented by Chris Knotts, ASPE Training

Regardless of what industry you’re in, today’s large companies share some remarkably similar characteristics. We live and die by these common denominators:

·         Heavy reliance on technology, IT teams, and software

In the middle of this daunting mix, we are called upon to constantly innovate or fall behind. But how? Is it even possible to repeatably and methodically achieve this mythical “innovation” that everyone talks about? We contend that it is. Join us for a brief primer on Lean Innovation. We’ll introduce you to the following:

·         Lean: what is it?
·         A brief history of lean management principles
·         Lean thinking
·         Lean applied in today’s professions (IT, development, DevOps, project management)

Understanding Product Theory and Strategy for PMs and BAs
Presented by ASPE Training

Innovation and creativity are business bingo words for sure, but even though they conjure up visions of blow hard empty suit executives clamoring on and on, they are still critical. At the end of the day organizations grow by entering new markets, adding new products, reacting to changes impacting your current product set or adding new customers. All of these business actions are empowered and amplified by innovation and creativity. With one big consideration, new products can be driven by internal capabilities development and that’s where Business Analysts and Project Managers come in to play. More and more companies are developing internal systems capabilities as a competitive advantage in which they can use as a platform to drive new products and solutions. Ultimately a product portfolio is like a well. The deeper you have to go to find interested customers the more expensive it gets and the more work you have to put into getting the business. So if you can find new products or quickly locate new customers within the context of current capabilities you can continue to get the “richness” of margin without digging a completely new well. PMs and BAs are now at the forefront of developing additional capabilities to logically connect new services and products to existing systems.

In this session you will learn:

  • The complete details of product theory
      o S-curve analysis
      o Creation of value
  • An understanding of cognitive diversity and cognitive basis
o How to cover come those issues to create something new
  • How ideation works
  • Understanding of Influence and getting things done
  • Cognitive biases that impact creative change initiatives
  • The concept of self-organization and empowering teams to create and execute without leadership involvement
  • Lead-start up and iterative product development

Building Business Analysis Capability in a Consulting Business
Presented by Scott Combs, CBAP, Keir Whytock, CBAP and Sean Ryan

The life of a consulting business analyst (BA) presents many different challenges than those faced by “in-house” BAs – some obvious and some not so. As individual practitioners, consulting BAs have to be highly adaptable and able to plan and execute business analysis efforts quickly, in diverse organizational environments. They also play a role in the sales cycle: assessing tender documents, peer-reviewing proposals, and qualifying potential new business opportunities. Version 1 – an IT consultancy in Ireland and the UK – recognize these challenges and have used the BABOK® Guide since 2009, as a key guide and reference to address them.

In this webinar, you will hear from three senior consulting BAs at Version 1.  They will openly discuss their practice challenges, and provide details on their approach to turn those challenges into opportunities.
Specifically, they will share how the BABOK® Guide is used as the cornerstone of their own framework to,

·         build a thriving business analysis community of practice,
·         develop a “consulting perspective”,
·         build up their own skills development initiatives, and
·         broaden the impact of business analysis in their organization.

You will also gain insight into the special characteristics of the different industries in which these consulting BAs work (including, financial services and public sector) and how they affect business analysis practice.

Requirements Definition Best Practices for Software RFPs
Presented by IAG Consulting

This two-hour webinar covers techniques and guidelines for defining the type of requirements needed for inclusion in an RFP for application software. In order for Project Managers and Business Analysts to evaluate vendors and their software proposals, the business requirements need to be appropriately defined and structured.

Data Mining
Presented by Venkadesh Narayanan, MBA, CBAP, CSCP, PMI-PBA, CBPP, CPRE-FL

As you may know, the largest cab company does not own a car and the world’s largest hotel does not own not even a single hotel. How is this possible? They made it possible through the systems that they put in place to manage the data and the flow of information. Data mining is used to improve decision making by finding useful patterns and insights from data. Data mining is an analytic process that examines large amounts of data from different perspectives and summarises the data in such a way that useful patterns and relationships are discovered. During this webinar we will understand what is data mining and its elements such as requirements elicitation, data preparation, data analysis, modelling techniques and deployment.

Learning Outcomes:

1.       Understand the technique and its purpose
2.       Gain insights on when and where to use the technique
3.       Apply the technique in their day-to-day business analysis activities
4.       Identify the software tool associated with the technique.

Introduction to Business Value Analysis
Presented by David Mantica, President, ASPE Training

Agile is a great way to build solutions, products or software in a way to reduce waste, connect to needs, and protect you from risk. But you still have to understand what to build. A number of Agile teams are learning the hard way that their real value isn’t in following the science of the Agile practices. It is about picking the right things to build for the right reasons. Without a strong Product Owner, Agile teams can start providing output that misses needs or opportunities in much the same ways as waterfall projects.

Business Value Analysis looks at the way teams make decisions on what to build next. Usually this responsibility was left to the project sponsors (executives in the company) but the speed of change and the complexities of work systems are changing how decision on “what” is made.

This web seminar provides SDLC professionals with a first step in to understanding the very esoteric concept of Value. It can mean many different things based on someone prospective or position, but this session will provide tangible ways to assess value and who critical thinking skills are used to support the decision process. On top of that, this session will discuss how to look at business direction and connect it with the work you are planning to do.

Understanding this critical topic is the key to long term Agile success, especially at the program and portfolio level.

How Reusable Content Accelerates and Ensures Compliance in Agile
Presented by Blueprint Software Systems

Most organizations must address compliance with requirements from regulatory bodies, internal policy teams, and best practice groups. Doing so, however is complicated. Regulations and controls are difficult to interpret. They can change frequently. And the domain experts that know the most about them don’t have time to engage, which can cause serious bottlenecks that dramatically impact delivery speed.

There is a powerful way to overcome these challenges. By leveraging pre-packaged, validated, reusable compliance-related content, your teams can easily achieve, maintain, and prove compliance with regulations and policies across jurisdictions, systems, and teams. And the benefits of this best practice approach are not limited to compliance alone.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

·         Why easy access to pre-packaged, validated, reusable compliance requirements information helps your teams achieve, maintain, and prove compliance quickly and with confidence.
·         One example of how an industry expert’s interpretation of a critical electronic records and electronic signatures regulation accelerates and ensures compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 and GMP Annex 11.
·         How leveraging the best practice of Content Accelerators can streamline delivery and improve quality in other ways – speeding non-functional requirements definition, boosting enterprise Agile adoption, and proliferating shared best practices, to name only a few examples

Building and Maintaining Agile Teams
Presented by Terrell Smith, Senior Trainer and Consultant, Corporate Education Group

As organizations transition to the agile environment, they must transition to an agile mindset. This requires the definition of new roles, which can cause added confusion. Unfortunately there is no concise definition of how to build an agile team and there tends to be a lot of debate over the traditional roles of the project manager and the business analyst, as well as other players on agile projects. Organizations that maintain a traditional IT way of thinking on roles are likely putting their adoption of agile at risk.

Two questions that those new to agile usually ask are: - what are the roles on an agile team? And how do you organize an agile team? This webinar addresses these questions by examining best practices in how to develop and maintain an agile team.

This webinar will explore:

1.       Drawing lines from traditional titles to agile titles
2.       Staying focused on the agile manifesto and agile principles
3.       Focusing on building a team with skills that align with agile versus focusing on roles
4.       Defining components of a successful agile team and some core principles
5.       Getting good people and the importance of effective communication
6.       Adopting the agile mindset

Continuous Delivery 101
Presented by Chris Knotts, ASPE Training

Continuous Delivery (CD) is gaining steam as a practical set of technical processes for delivering end-to-end application value in a faster, more incremental fashion. Continuous Delivery is also closely associated with DevOps, although there is much debate about exactly how the two terms overlap.

In this one hour web seminar, we will bring some clarification to these topics as we present an overview and take questions on Continuous Delivery. We will relate CD as a set of workflow and IT management practices to DevOps as a cultural movement, and discuss the complex relationship between the two. Key areas of discussion will include:

·         CD: What is it?
·         A brief history of continuous delivery
·         Why CD is so important
·         Continuous Delivery and DevOps
·         Real-world case study: implementing Agile, DevOps, and CD at scale
