Don’t Just go Through the Motions, Practice Professional Scrum

Presented by Eric Naiburg, COO, Scrum.org

Scrum was originally developed for complex software development projects, but is now being used on almost any type of team-based product work. The framework as defined in the Scrum Guide is a simple yet powerful way to bring order to complexity through learning by providing frequent opportunities for frequent feedback on both how we work and the thing we have and will be working on.

While many people are practicing Scrum, practicing it effectively requires something more than just following the mechanics and fundamentals of the framework. Professional Scrum helps teams get out of that mechanical, going through the motions habit when it comes to Scrum. In this Scrum Pulse webinar, Eric Naiburg, COO, Scrum.org will walk the audience through how Professional Scrum is different and how it requires the Scrum Values, mindset techniques for ways of working and thinking, focusing on outcomes and an environment that supports Professional Scrum including trust.

10 Tips To Facilitate Effective Sprint Reviews

Presented by Ravi Verma, Professional Scrum Trainer

The purpose of the Sprint Review is to inspect the outcome of the Sprint and determine future adaptations. It is an impactful Scrum event that can potentially make or break your organization’s Scrum adoption. However, it might also be one of the most misunderstood and poorly facilitated Scrum Events.

Sometimes, the Sprint Review ends up as an event where Developers demo tons of details that make no sense to stakeholders. At other times, it can become an elaborate, choreographed promotional event to showcase the talent of the Scrum Team. In either case, the responses are usually underwhelming and the Sprint Review results in a waste of golden opportunities for valuable learning and course-correction.

In this webinar, Professional Scrum Trainer Ravi Verma will share some common real-world challenges his clients and students have faced in their Sprint Reviews and ten adjustments that have helped them overcome these challenges. As a bonus, if you submit your most burning question about Sprint Review facilitation, we will try to customize our content to address your needs.

Business Analysis Webinars for March 2015 - Part II

Top Pitfalls that Lead to Agile Troubles
Presented by David Mantica

With anything new there are going to be difficulties. What starts out a small test with a pilot team leads to a huge bandwagon affect. This is great but some bandwagoners get nervous when the problems start and ultimately become the naysayers and finger pointers that can kill Agile before it even gets a chance to provide benefit.

In this web seminar we will discuss in detail the top issues that lead to problems deploying Agile. This session will give you the information you need to keep the bandwagon's wheels here on earth and avoid the bubble burst when expectations are set too high.

Problems we will discuss include:

·         Self-organized team function
·         Poor Product Owner performance
·         Lack of adequate training and coaching
·         No change management plan
·         Lack of executive support
·         Inconsistent business unit support

Ultimately Agile success requires an organization to do some creative destruction which leads to inefficiency and confusion for a period of time. Be prepared to weather that storm by preparing your sponsors and management with an understanding of the problems you will face on your road to incorporating Agile methods into your organization.

Business Analysis: Is it a Role or a Skill?
Presented by David Mantica

The Agile evangelists would say it is a skill the entire team needs. The IIBA would say it is a role that needs to grow in order for companies to gain competitive advantage with their technology deployments and internal automation. PMI (the Project Management Institute) has also spoken on this topic. Their position, based on the certification they developed (PMI-PBA) is it's a skill successful project managers add to their tool kit of skills and techniques. What can be factually attested to is the following; as SDLC practitioner positions like developers, testers and architects were being outsource, larger enterprise organizations depended on building software and systems for competitive advantage have been hiring Business Analysts. Just look at Indeed or Dice or Monster and see which tech jobs are HOT and Business Analyst will be in the top 5.

This presentation will break out the current trends in the software development industry and where BA is seen as skill and were it is being built out as a role. From there we will take a look at the pros and cons of each view and where things may end up in the end. Ultimately giving you critical information as you plan your career growth goals for 2015 and beyond.

Webinar: Requirements for Business Analytics
Presented by Joy Beatty, VP at Seilevel

Normal people don't look at data sets just for fun; they analyze them to make business decisions. Business analysts are more frequently finding themselves on strategic projects that turn large and often highly complex data sets into meaningful information from which conclusive decisions and actions can be derived. Analysis of big data is already a reality today in most IT organizations and will grow in significance as businesses look to gain a better understanding for capturing, structuring and learning from their data.

In this presentation, we will offer advice on tackling requirements for business analytics projects. This webinar outlines how to elicit strategic analytics decisions to help prioritize requirements work, and how to prepare for the future of big data by specifying data needs. Participants will hear examples of questions they can use to engage businesses to think outside the box about their requirements, and consider new possibilities from analytics projects.

To Manage or to Motivate: 9 Need-to-Know Traits of the Best Leaders
Presented by John Baldoni

Enabling Your People to Succeed

Leadership, as Dwight Eisenhower once said, is the ability to get people to do what they don’t want to do and like it. That quote addresses two aspects of the power that a leader exercises. One is asking people to do something. The second is motivating people to achieve.

At its core leadership is simple: moving others toward a goal. However leadership is difficult: creating an environment that enables people to succeed.

This webcast will focus on those traits a leader can utilize to bring his/her people toward purpose that unites in common cause.

What You Will Learn

·         Among the traits we will explore are:
·         Demonstrating character
·         Projecting authority
·         Communicating through listening/learning
·         Influencing through others
·         Making tough decisions
·         Showing humility
·         Exhibiting humor
·         Motivating from within
·         Leading: be seen, be heard, be there

Requirements vs. System Documentation
Presented by Jiri Walek, VP of Product Development at Polarion Software

There was a time in the BA’s not so distant past when the source code also served as the documentation of what was actually implemented. Quality assurance engineers could compare it with the BA’s requirement specifications relatively easily. Those days are gone. The sheer number of lines of code (LOC) has grown exponentially and continues to mushroom. A multimedia project can easily have 50 million lines and as BA’s you need the right tools and strategies to develop and link up supportive documentation with requirements specifications.

Nowadays, code is no longer a workable way to provide project documentation and ensure project integrity and consistency. Furthermore, effective BAs have to be good translators. They must be able to speak the language of the business, effectively interpret it for the analytical minds of the technical implementers, plus find the right vehicles to convey the information. In order to achieve all this, you need the right tools and strategies to develop and link up supportive documentation with requirements specifications. This webinar will provide you with practical tips and real life best practice recommendations for effectively managing requirements specifications and supportive documentation in the 21st century.

When you attend this event you will:
• Learn how to balance what is written in the user story and how the projects specifications are updated
• Unlock synergies across disparate development teams to empower all collaborators to resound faster to business requirements
• Find out about mitigating and managing risk in your regulatory compliance documentation?

Who can benefit from this webinar?
• Business Analysts
• Project Managers
• System Analysts
• Requirements Managers
• Quality Assurance Manage

Transitioning from Waterfall: The Benefits of Becoming Agile
Presented by David Mantica

This web seminar will not be an hour infomercial pitching you on Agile with the end being a hard sell for coaching/training services or agile software. The goal of this session is to provide someone interested in Agile with an understanding of the benefits of Agile methods by comparing and contrasting the typical waterfall process with Agile.

In this web seminar we will do a very basic breakdown of SDLC (Software/System Develop Lifecycle) roles and responsibilities. From there we will look at those same roles in action in Waterfall and how those roles and actions change in Agile. After that we will look at the areas within Agile that provide higher visibility, less risk, greater adaptability and increased business value when compared with waterfall.

Ultimately we will discuss some of the top problems or challenges organizations face with looking to incorporate agile or some agile practices. And address those challenges with ideas on change management strategies to support an Agile transformation.

Nothing is as simple as marketing makes it seem. With Agile though there are some significant organization benefits, especially around meeting NEED with your software/systems work that makes worthwhile to investigate if your organization can make the transformation.
