Rethinking BPMN Part 3: The Business Rule Task and DMN
Presented by Razvan Radulian

In the first webinar of the "Rethinking BPMN" series, we talked about what GOOD Process Models are.
In the second webinar, we talked about a good PROCESS to model GOOD BPMN Processes.
In this webinar/whitepaper, the third in this series, we will talk about how to address the Spaghetti process models problem (unnecessarily complicated process models, due to the fact that they try to capture complex decisions using solely BPMN). We will see how to simplify such process models (using the Business Rule task in BPMN), without losing the ability to model complex decisions (using DMN). As before, we will analyze several examples to demonstrate theoretical concepts.

Topics/examples covered in this webinar:

• Why is process modeling (even when using BPMN) not the best way to model complex business rules/decisions? Introduce/analyze a Spaghetti process model.
• What is the Decision Model and Notation (DMN) standard and why was it created?
• What is the difference between Decision Requirements and Decision Logic? How do you model them (Requirements and Logic) in DMN?
• Why is modeling Decisions in DMN a better option (than in BPMN)?
• What is a Business Rule Task (in BPMN) and why was it created?
• How do we combine BPMN and DMN to simplify process models/modeling and to achieve more precise and clear decision models?
• Lessons-learned: How can you apply all this information?

The BA and Data Mining
Presented by Steve Blais, PMP, Consultant, Author, Teacher, Coach

Data mining has been considered the province of the data scientist and data analyst. But the data scientists and data analysts only solve the business problems that are given to them provided those business problems can be solved with data.
Someone has to analyze the processes and conditions of the business to determine what the problems are and then determine whether data can solve those problems and answer the questions related to those problems. And that someone is the business analyst.
This webinar provides guidelines to determining business problems that can be solved with data and provides the details of what data mining is all about.

Topics:
·        Business analyst or data analyst or data scientist?
·        Determine the right data
·        The process of getting value from data
·        Produce actionable insights
·        Provide the questions and interpret the answers

Where Do Business Analysts Fit into the Scaled Agile Framework?
Presented by Michael Roberts, ASPE Training

For many years, the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe) has been a leading scaling methodology for large enterprises wanting to apply agile practices for large groups of individuals.  Published by Dean Leffingwell and his fellows at Scaled Agile Inc., they have had Fortune 1000 companies adopting the framework left and right as a way of working differently to adapt to market changes and implement a better way of working.  In the SAFe model however, the term “Business Analyst” doesn’t exist.  In this informative talk, we will discuss the SAFe 5.0 framework and provide some context on how Business Analysts would survive and thrive in such an environment/implementation of the Scaled Agile Framework.

We Will Cover:
·        Organizational challenges that are addressed by SAFe 5.0
·        An introduction to the SAFe framework “BIG Picture”
·        How an Agile Release Train (ART) powers SAFe
·        How Business Analysts fit into the Scaled Agile Framework as team members, POs or PMs

I'm a BA Girl in an Agile World
Presented by Mindy Bohannon, CBAP, Managing Consultant at Excella

Do the Business Analyst's (BA) roles and responsibilities on an agile project differ from those on a waterfall project? Should the three amigos always include the analyst? At a minimum, the answer is certainly yes to both questions, although how the work is done depends on the team and project. During this session we will review how the role of a Business Analyst on an agile project can vary, and further discuss the impact on the development team and what makes a Business Analyst good at his/her job. All analysts bring excellent communication, collaboration, and trust to their work on project teams – but how we communicate and collaborate will differ.

A Golden Partnership - PMs, BAs, and POs
Presented by Peter Monkhouse, President at MonkArt

Organizations need great products to implement their strategy. They also need products that meet customers’ needs and demands. One of the challenges organizations have is how to align the roles to execute strategies better and produce more value for their customers. This presentation will explore the roles of project managers, business analysts, and product owners working together in partnership through the project and product lifecycles. We will first define the roles of project managers, business analysts, and product owners and their interactions. We will discuss how the roles fit into the product lifecycle to deliver value to customers. We will present the iterative product development approach through an example and why this approach is key to delivering value to customers. Then we will show how project managers, business analysts, and product owners support each other in the iterative approach to ensure appropriate stakeholder engagement and communications and getting feedback from customers. Through continuous feedback, integration, and product improvement will result in products meeting customer needs and organizations achieving their strategic objectives. This virtual presentation has been designed with interactive discussions and activities.

Agility from Different Viewpoints to Influence Digital Transformation
Presented by Fabrício Laguna, CBAP, PMP, MBA

Are you leading an agile transformation or just following it? In the agile extension of the BABOK Guide, IIBA presents 3 different horizons to plan work as a business analyst and agile practitioner. The role you play in your organization will shape how far you can influence the agile transformation in your organization. IIBA members should continuously work to be more and more strategic, not just to enhance their individual careers, but because this is how they can effectively help organizations to achieve better business outcomes.

The Austrian author Klaus Leopold in the book Rethinking Agile, proposes the concepts of Flight Levels to point why several tenants of agile transformations fail by focusing on only one level. Horizons and Flight levels are very similar metaphors, with some differences we will discuss in this webinar. Understanding agility from these different viewpoints will help you influence digital transformation in your organization.

Applied Requirements Engineering: How to increase project success in any project setting
Presented by Stan Bühne, Vice Managing Director at IREB GmbH

Key Message: Requirements Engineering (RE) skills are massively underestimated in many projects
• Today, software development must cope with multiple challenges Increased complexity of system and environment
• New competitors that arrive in the digital market space
• Limited time-to-market for new products
• Stretched IT/ project budgets

Consequently, companies may switch to adaptive/agile approaches to address these challenges. In the transformation phase from plan-driven to adaptive/agile approaches, they are often tempted to save time and effort when it comes to requirements elicitation, analysis and documentation. This often results in software that does not meet user expectations at all.
The reasons are unclear requirements at all stages of development:
• Designers and developers who do not know the actual needs and requirements
• Testers who cannot validate the solution due to missing requirements
• Product owners who have lost the overview of existing software capabilities

Even in an adaptive/agile world, requirements still need to be elicited, understood, documented, consolidated and managed – though perhaps to a lesser extent than in classical, plan-driven approaches.
When attending the webinar, you will:
• Understand the fundamental principles of RE.
• Learn how RE makes the difference in your projects.
• Learn how to find the best fitting RE approach for your project setup.

One of the many things we’ve learned in 2020 is that there is a lot we cannot control! Everything is changing and we’re always figuring it out as we go. Whether they realize it or not, leaders are improv comedians, often with worse senses of humor :). Great business leaders and great improvisers adapt to change, build trust among teams, communicate clearly, and make decisions with limited information. Just like improv comedians create their scripts from scratch and are masters of handling uncertainty, we can learn to embrace uncertainty and change, turning chaos into comedy. During this jam session (webinar), we’ll share principles and techniques to improvise your leadership and teams all while having fun and laughing!

Business Analysis Webinars for June 2020

Where have all the settlers gone?
Presented by John Albrecht

A Talk/Workshop to explore different motivations within organisations. What are the motivations behind individuals’ actions and what can we do to better understand and work with all the people in our organisations?

Working with teams in a variety of organisations I have noticed repeating patterns, behaviours and outcomes. People are so often pulling in different directions creating frustration rather than collaboration. A dive into shadow, projection transactional analysis, ego states, drama triangles and how there is an interplay with the scripts and games within our organisations and an exploration of the biggest game of all

What roles do we play and what options do we have to move forward and away from drama?

OLN Community Open Space: Thriving with change
Presented by Coaching Agile Journeys

You are Invited.

You are invited to join our first OLN community Open Space event as we discuss the theme: Thriving with change.

We help others in times of change, but now we find ourselves in the same boat with others, trying to adapt to the circumstances at hand.

You might be wondering how to answer questions such as: How does sudden global change impact us and our future? Can we thrive with change? What comes next for Agile Coaching, Agile, and organizations undergoing transformation and rapid change? How does the current world situation change the way we approach and show up to do our work? How will it affect our lives even after Coronavirus has passed?

How does this sudden shift into connected-video change things? Does this new medium encourage more or less openness?

Is the sudden shift to connected, online communication opening or closing access to decision rights?
What happens to the typical-meeting authority dynamics when everyone is presented equally in a Brady-bunch style, completely random video grid? Which square is the seat at the head of the table?
How do you lead in this new environment? How do you follow?

Do those with better communication skills in this medium have a new kind of superpower? An unbeatable advantage?

Is facilitation of meetings in this new medium essential? If so, what will happen to company culture as a result of this shift?

We invite you to our first OLN community Open Space to explore these questions and more. We are on a journey without maps, except as we co-create them. There are no simple answers, only an opportunity to explore and find our path together. You are invited to join the Open Leadership Network Community on June 4 at noon ET to begin the exploration.

*This is an Open Space (http://openspaceagility.com/what-is-ost/) event so prepare to engage and be surprised.

The BA and Business Analytics
Presented by Steve Blais, PMP, PMI-ACP, Author, Consultant, Teacher and Coach

It might be easy for the business analyst to pass the challenges of business analytics, with all of the statistics, math, algorithms, programming in strange languages like R and Python off to the data analysts and data scientists but at the same time we may find that we are passing control of the business and of our careers to someone else.

Business analytics does not work, at least it won’t work successfully, without having some kind of business problem to solve. Despite the mythology of data mining and data analysts coming up with magic associations and insights that no one ever saw before, it doesn’t really happen that way. The data analysts and data scientists are brilliant at applying algorithms to massive amounts of data to produce results, but someone has to understand what the organization’s problems and issues are and form the questions that the data scientists and analysts are going to answer with data.

This webinar introduces you to the concepts of business analytics and data mining and how the business analyst plays an integral role in the overall success of business and data analytics in the organization.

Topics:
• It sounds similar, but it’s not your job?
• Using business analytics
• The business analytics value chain
• The business analyst’s role and why it’s necessary
• Asking the right questions
