Managing Product Development Complexities Across Hardware and Software Teams

Presented by Steven Meadows, Principal Solutions Lead, Jama Software

As products and software become more complex, so does the process required to build them. Without the proper tools and processes in place, these growing complexities can increase the risk of flaws — which can lead to expensive, and potentially reputation-harming recalls. Managing complexities across software and hardware development requires the entire development process to consider (and include) a variety of teams and interdependencies.

In the second episode of our Optimize with Jama Connect webinar series, we will discuss some of the key challenges that teams face when integrating hardware and software requirements, risks, and tests, with a document based or legacy tool approach.

In this 30-minute presentation, we’ll also discuss how Jama Connect and its integration capabilities helps teams developing complex systems and products to:

    • Reduce product development risk

    • Provide end-to-end traceability for all involved teams

    • Improve product quality

Establishing a "Common Language" on a Scrum Team

Presented by John Riley, Professional Scrum Trainer

Words matter, especially when working in any team setting. Words that are spoken or written by one person can have different meanings when read or heard by another. Scrum Teams have multiple members, which means the interpretation of words used in the team setting increases with each member. The chances of misinterpretation also increases. Shared understanding among members is needed to reduce complexity and provide greater clarity. So the need for a "common language" becomes critical to produce value every Sprint.

Create your own playbook to help your teams and organization develop their "common language". In this Scrum Pulse webinar, Professional Scrum Trainer
John Riley will demonstrate some theory and components behind a "common language". Words and phrases become less about jargon and more about shared understanding. You will also see some techniques to use in developing a team's common language, and how this language helps a team create artifacts. Some of these artifacts include Product Goals, team agreements, and Product Backlog Items.

Common Sense Scrum: Why Scrum Gets So Much Resistance

Presented by Eric Tucker, Trainer and Consultant, Corporate Education Group

One common belief is that Scrum was designed to help you solve problems as you develop products and/or services. In fact, the primary benefit of Scrum is the opposite. If executed the way it is intended, Scrum’s superpower is its ability to reveal your problems, rapidly. Why do so many companies cherry-pick parts of Scrum to execute, while discarding other parts? Because by human nature, we don’t like having our shortcomings thrown in our faces. In this webinar, we’ll look at the Scrum framework and provide common-sense reasons why Scrum should be practiced in its entirety — or not at all. The short-and long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term discomfort.

Creating Requirements During Times of Constant Change

Presented by Pamela Paterson, BJ, MS, CBAP, LEAN Six Sigma

As business analysts, we are known for being experts at identifying and managing business requirements. But, how should our most notable skills be adapted as COVID-19 has the world around us going through constant change? The remote BA cannot depend upon “hallway” networking and face-to-face interpersonal skills. A completely remote or hybrid environment can block the flow of communication with our stakeholders. Furthermore, as the financial markets fluctuate, business priorities are encountering unexpected shifts. There is a need for the BA to have a sense of personal agility, whether their workplace culture is agile or not. And although always important, requirements traceability is now more important than ever. Amid business disruption, the BA needs to track requirements changes using the best practices and tools at their disposal. So, how can a BA, whether remote or not, continue to deliver the value expected in requirements creation and maintenance amid this constant change? Join us and learn the answers.

Learning Objectives:

    • How to overcome remote communication blockers

    • How to incorporate personal agility into requirements elicitation and management

    • How to use best practices and tools to maintain requirements traceability

How Business Value Engineering Unlocks The Potential of Digital Transformation

Presented by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®)

By attending this webinar, you will learn how Business Value Engineering helps align stakeholders and delivers the basis for successful change efforts. Business Value Engineering involves understanding how stakeholders perceive value before using that insight to shape the vision for future state offerings and then optimizing the steps needed to get there.

As business colleagues collaborate, they gather and structure knowledge information supported by focused “pathways” that help them answer questions such as:

• Which innovations should we prioritize and why? What are the costs and resources versus the

    expected benefits identified?
• What does the roadmap look like for a given business capability? What’s the best way of

“chunking” change and capability uplifts over time?
• Ultimately, how do we align investment decisions with the potential for value contribution to the

    things our stakeholders care about?

The Business Analyst: Managing Up and Over

Presented by Steve Blais, PMP, PBA, Author, Consultant, Coach

As a business analyst, do you manage your manager? Do you know what information to provide to your manager, when to provide it and how to provide it in the best and most influential manner? Are you ever in a position where you need to “manage” other people on the project or even those outside the project, even though you have no authority to do so?

In a survey of CIOs conducted a few years back, the majority mentioned some form of upward management as a contributor to their success in achieving their executive level positions. The role of the business analyst is one in which the exercise of upward management contributes to their future success, but it is also necessary to their basic survival and success in their role. Upward management and what we might term “sideways management”, or the management of others outside the project who are in a supervisory role, is a form of applying influence to get things done without exerting authority.

This webinar discusses the different aspects of upward and sideways management, providing tips and techniques to employ as well as pitfalls to avoid.

Change Makers: The Evolving Leaders of the Future

Presented by Dt. Al Zeitoun, Senior Trainer and Executive Coach, Corporate Education Group

The future of work has been changing, and fast. Organizations worldwide are realizing the value achieved by changing their ways of working to become more adaptable, more experimental, and more innovative. This strategic realization is requiring a fresh reflection on who the future leaders are and a fast shift toward scaling a new mix of leadership qualities.

The leaders of this hybrid future will invest in building a trust currency. They will need to build an adaptive mindset, free themselves from the dogma of “this is how we’ve always done it,” and focus on making an immense sustainable impact while using digitization to scale the value delivery of the change efforts. This future of work is projectized, fluid, and requires servant leaders who enable their team members to be empathic and who create a culture where team members feel safe to express their diverse views openly and experiment often and fast.

In this webinar, we’ll explore:

    • Skillsets for leading change initiatives

    • The adaptability attributes of the evolving leaders around experimentation, resilience, integrating,

       and connecting

    • The culture of tomorrow’s leading organizations

    • The strategic role of the project economy in creating and sustaining value

    • The leader’s role in creating a clear focus for the future organization

Software Development Pearls

Presented by Karl Wiegers, Principal Consultant at Process Impact

Experience is a powerful teacher, but it’s also slow and painful. Software practitioners can’t afford to make every mistake others have suffered. You can compress the education and bypass much of the pain by absorbing lessons from others who have already climbed the learning curves. Based on my more than 50 years of software experience and 25 years of helping software teams succeed in nearly 150 organizations, the book Software Development Pearls presents 60 lessons you can apply to projects regardless of the application domain, technology, development lifecycle, or your role. These pragmatic principles, perspectives, and practices cover six crucial domains of project success: requirements, design, project management, culture and teamwork, quality, and process improvement. This presentation briefly introduces 24 of the 60 lessons and drills down into six additional lessons. Collecting such pearls of software wisdom can pay off quickly for anyone striving to build high-quality software products.
