Engaging Stakeholders and Management with Evidence-Based Management (EBM)

Presented by Todd Miller, PST and Patricia Kong, PO

As a Product Owner, Scrum Master or manager, you constantly wonder and get asked, “How’s the team doing? What are you doing to help the team? What have you achieved? How are you making your decisions?” and you are often defending your position. Imagine if you could approach these conversations proactively.

Evidence-Based Management (EBM) provides three levels of goals that frame your pursuits, four key value areas to examine measurements and an evolving path to working toward those goals. Goals, Evidence, and Empiricism are at the heart of EBM and will give you what you need to better manage expectations.

In this webinar,
Todd Miller, Professional Scrum Trainer and Patricia Kong, Product Owner - Enterprise Agility at Scrum.org will walk you through concepts you can use to develop your own dashboard that you can use to proactively engage upper management and stakeholders about the value of your product and the capability of your team(s).

Introduction to Business Value Analysis

Presented by David Mantica, VP and General Manager, SoftEd USA

Agile is a great way to build solutions, products, or software in a way that reduces waste, connects ideas to need, and protects users from risk. When it comes to Agile, you still have to understand what to build in order to properly utilize its many upsides. Several Agile teams are learning the hard way that their real value does not come from following the science of the agile practices, but it can be found in the team’s ability to plugin the right aspects to build for the right reasons. Without a strong Product Owner, Agile teams may start providing an output that misses need or opportunities in much the same way as waterfall projects.

Business Value Analysis looks at the way teams make decisions on what to build next. While this responsibility is typically left in the hands of the project sponsors (executives in the company), the speed of change and the complexities of our work systems are changing the way decision regarding the “next steps” in the process are made.

This presentation provides professionals with the foundation necessary to understand the very esoteric concept of Value, which can mean many different things based on someone’s prospective or position. This session will provide tangible ways to assess value as well as what critical thinking skills should be utilized to support the decision process. Additionally, this session will discuss how to look at business direction and connect it the work planning you do. Understanding this critical topic is the key to long term product success, especially at the program and portfolio level, and this holds true regardless of what methodology you use.

Interviewing Stakeholders: How to Get the Most (and Best) Requirements

Presented by Pamela Paterson BA Consultant

Interviewing is a key technique for business analysts to elicit information from stakeholders. Whether a single stakeholder or a group, knowing how to conduct an effective interview enables us to obtain the information and data we need to create requirements, develop processes, and do our other business analysis work. This requires expert interviewing skills that facilitate trust and collaboration. What kinds of questions do we ask and when, and for which stakeholder and scenario? Are there some question types that are better used with individuals than groups? At the same time, how do we document responses accurately and efficiently? Join us to learn the answers from Pamela Paterson, BJ, MS, CBAP, LSSGB, APO, a senior IT business analyst and communications professional who prepared stakeholders for national media interviews.

Learning Objectives

In this session you will learn how to:

Research, plan, and prepare for various types of interviews and stakeholders.

Identify the various question types and apply an appropriate use case for them.

Learn how to layer elicitation and decide the most effective sequence of questions.

Build trust and rapport with your stakeholders so they feel comfortable in the interview process.
