Business Analytics Series: Data Visualization in Visio. Really? Visio??

Presented by Scott A. Helmers, Partner, Harvard Computing Group

There are lots of data analytics tools available, but most come with two significant costs: the cost of a license and the cost to obtain the required skills to use the software. But what if you could create dashboards and data visualizations with software you already use? What if your dashboards could show data in the context of diagrams that you already provide to your colleagues and customers? You may be surprised to learn that Visio could be the answer to your business and operational intelligence requirements. You can layer data visualizations on top of process maps, organization charts, floor plans… the same diagrams you already use to communicate vital information. And best of all, you can create even more sophisticated data visualizations by adding Visio visuals to Power BI dashboards.

In this webinar, speaker Scott Helmers will show you how to:

    1. Leverage software and knowledge you already have

    2. Build BI dashboards in as little as 10 minutes

    3. Visualize process metrics and KPIs in the context of a process map

    4. Reflect important employee performance data on an org chart

    5. Combine Power BI and Visio to gain insight by viewing data in the context of a diagram

Creating a Coaching Mindset in Your Organization

Presented by Christa Kirby, Vice President, Talent Development, Corporate Education Group

The business demand for coaching is growing exponentially every year. While hiring external coaches is one way to benefit from the ROI that coaching delivers, another more sustainable option is to create a coaching mindset within your organization.

Gone are the days when managers had all the right answers and gave directives on what to do and how to do it. With constant, disruptive change being the norm, a new set of capabilities is required for managerial – and organizational – success. Equipping managers with the skills to guide and support employees, asking incisive questions that lead them to discover their own answers, is a fundamental shift that many successful organizations are making.

In this webinar, we will explore:

    • How a coaching mindset unlocks people's potential
    • What tools and support are needed to build coaching capabilities
    • How to choose a coaching model that fits your organizational culture

Leading Through Change and Uncertainty

Presented by Lisa Cox, Trainer and Consultant, Corporate Education Group

One thing we can be sure of is change. It’s inevitable, and a natural part of our everyday personal and professional lives. Even though it’s a known fact that change will occur, there is still un-certainty around the long-term effects of change in an organization. Dealing with change and uncertainty is a daunting responsibility for every leader.

change efforts often fail because the organization and their leaders lack the framework and skills to guide their people through it effectively. Failed or stalled change initiatives waste time and money, reduce productivity and engagement, and increase employee turnover.

In this webinar you will learn tools for how to create an effective change management plan to maximize time, effort, and money, and set the leaders in the organization up for success.

In this webinar, we will explore:

    • Recognizing change starts with you
    • Establishing a mindset and plan for change
    • Measuring progress

Annual General Meeting and Bluegrass Business Analysis Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Presented by the Bluegrass IIBA Chapter Board of Directors

The Bluegrass IIBA Chapter will host its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and induct the eighth class of professionals into the Bluegrass Business Analysis Hall of Fame (BBAHoF).  The AGM will look at what the Chapter has accomplished in the past year in relation to its strategic plan, its community outreach efforts, relationships it has built and inform participants of the strategic plan for the coming year.  There are transformational changes happening in the global business analysis community, we will look at how the Bluegrass IIBA Chapter will bring those changes to the Bluegrass business analysis community.

The Bluegrass Business Analysis Hall of Fame recognizes those from the community that have made a significant individual contribution to the advancement of business analysis as a profession within the Bluegrass region. Nominations were made from the community knowing that inductees do not have to be affiliated with the Bluegrass IIBA Chapter or IIBA; they just must to have made a personal contribution to the advancement and awareness of the value of business analysis here within the Bluegrass region. We will induct our eighth class of inductees for this prestigious recognition of individual effort.

Business Analytics Series: How to Assess Validity and Reliability of Data

Presented by Dr. Mark Griffin, Founding Director, Insight Research Services Associated

A classic misunderstanding about big data is the idea that if a dataset is big enough then any pattern found within the dataset must be a meaningful pattern. In contrast the reality can be summarized as “garbage in, garbage out”. Ultimately any time we consider using any data within our work then we need to assess the quality of the data, and to decide whether or not the data is suitable for our purposes. Two of the core concepts within data quality of validity and reliability.

At a simple level validity considers whether what we have measured is a true measure of some underlying quality. For example, we might be able to easily measure employee turnover within a company, but is employee turnover a true measure of job satisfaction (just because staff remain working for us does that mean that they really enjoy their work?).

With reliability we might measure the same thing on two different occasions (possibly under different conditions) to see if we are measuring the same values. One type is reproducibility or test-retest reliability. In this case we ask the same question in the same way on two occasions. If we ask staff about job satisfaction, are we going to get the same results, or might staff experience good and bad days on the job (in which case how can we measure job satisfaction)? Another type is called inter-interviewer reliability and considers whether we are collecting the same measures irrespective of the choice of interviewer. For example, if we are doing a survey on attitudes towards gender diversity in the workplace will respondents answer the questions in the same way if they are being asked by a male and a female interviewer.

We will introduce these concepts of reliability and validity, and to consider different approaches for measuring these concepts. They are referred to in Section 2.3.3 (Explore Data) of the IIBA Guide to Business Data Analytics. Assessing the quality of data is an important step in the early stages of data analysis.

Lead “Like a Girl”

Presented by Christa Kirby, Vice President, Talent Development, Corporate Education Group

The 2014 campaign for Procter & Gamble’s Always brand sparked conversations all over the world around what it means to do something “Like a Girl.” Praised for its insight and impact, the campaign asked the question: “When did ‘Like a Girl’ become an insult?” Women bring a unique — and much-needed — constellation of skills and abilities to their roles as people leaders in the workplace. Current research shows, however, that women are overworked and under-recognized. Dramatically underrepresented in leadership, they are leaving their companies at the highest rate in years.

In this lively and thought-provoking webinar, we will explore: why we need women leaders; some of the challenges and opportunities that women leaders face; the larger context of “imposter syndrome;” and concrete steps organizations can take to drive progress on gender equity.

Business Analytics Series: 16 Visio Tips in 60 Minutes

Presented by Scott Helmers, Partner, Harvard Computing Group

Most of us learned Visio by doing: a boss or a colleague said “We need a flowchart of this process. By tomorrow.” Or “Can you create an org chart of our division?” or “Fred created this diagram before he left. Can you update it for Monday’s staff meeting?” We make do with what we know, but never had formal training or time to discover better techniques.

This session will give you 16 tips and tricks to move you past where you are now and into a world of new features and enhanced productivity. Presented by the best-selling author of Visio books over the last decade, you’ll learn about settings that will turn you into a Visio power user. You’ll see hyperlinking secrets that will double the communication power of any diagram. You’ll discover a set of buttons that take the nudging and guesswork out of aligning and distributing shapes. And if you have the right version of Visio, you’ll find out that you don’t even need to drag shapes onto the page: put your data in Excel and Visio will build the diagram for you!
