A Key Strategic Role in Delivering Organizational Change

Most business professionals have seen good organizational change and bad organizational change.  Some organizational change can be so bad as to be the cause of the demise of the organization.  In order for organizational change to be good for the organization it must solve a business need of the organization.  One of the strategic roles within the organization to help define that business need is that of the Enterprise Business Analyst.

There are many ways that the business analyst can identify business needs.  It can be a result of market research or an identified new opportunity brought about by actions of a vendor or competitor.   It could be derived from a strategic goal or initiative of the organization.  It could have come from a business user complaint about a current system issue and/or the subsequent Root Cause Analysis.  It could also be derived from an Enterprise Analysis activity that the BA performed, such as Capability Gap Analysis, SWOT Analysis or Product Feasibility Analysis.  Some organizational change may be necessary to be compliant with regulatory constraints.

Once identified, the business need should be documented in the Business Case to initiate a project to develop a solution for this business need.  This solution may, or may not, involve information technology software development; some solutions are completely a business solution.

Mobile and Wearable Computing: Using Data Analytics to Understand the Mobile Shopper
Presented by Prof. Anindya Ghose, NYU Stern

The dramatic growth in mobile and wearable computing activities has led to a corresponding torrent of granular data that capture a wide variety of user behavior in the digital world. Whether mobile users are communicating with others, posting or consuming digital content, alerting others to their location, purchasing goods or services, redeeming coupons or reacting to ads, they are creating a “digital trail.” Compounding this data generation is the imminent adoption and usage of different kinds of wearable computing devices. Such digital trace data on human interaction and activity lends itself to deeper explanatory and predictive models in the realm of customer analytics. Anindya Ghose will discuss how to measure and quantify the value created from the use of apps and advertising on mobile devices and their integration with wearable computing devices, in the course of meeting some strategic goals and tactical issues for firms. A key goal is to gain a better understanding of the "mobile shopper" using tools from business analytics that combine statistical and econometric modeling with randomized experiments "in the wild". The webinar will cover several projects that Professor Ghose has undertaken in multiple countries in Asia and Europe as well as discuss the state of the art knowledge in this space.

Key learning points:

·         Understanding audience behavior and advertising effectiveness on mobile devices
·         Understanding how consumers respond to geo targeting and geo fencing strategies using smart phone technologies.
·         Exploring the implications of wearable computing devices on marketing.

Agile, Iterative and Waterfall: Where does your team fall on the ‘spectrum’?
Presented by Tom McGraw

More than a decade has passed since the Agile Manifesto was written to help software developers implement a light-weight mindset and more efficient processes on the projects. The ideas have now transformed into something much larger with an impact that can be seen across the majority of software development groups and organizations.

During this one-hour web seminar, we will discuss a brief evolution of Agile in software development. Included will be thoughts on the various flavors that are typically identified as Agile and how they tie to the original Manifesto. Furthermore, we will discuss the idea of a ‘hybrid’ Agile approach (“AgileFall?”) and whether these groups are considered Agile. We will explore how Agile is viewed by practitioners, specifically, whether Agile should be seen as black and white (i.e., your team is using it, or your team is not using it) versus the idea that Agile can be viewed as a spectrum, indicating that certain teams could be ‘more agile’ than others based on their processes.

By the end of the seminar, you will be equipped with the tools to better understand how your group is utilizing Agile processes and determine “Where your team falls on the ‘spectrum’.”

Collaborative Requirements for BAs: Keeping Future Projects on Track
Presented by Will French, Solution Architect for Jama Software

As a Business Analyst or Project Manager, you are on the front lines of bringing products to market that build value for your business. If you’re like most BAs, however, you spend too much time reporting status, explaining context and tracking decisions. In this session, learn tips and tools to help you keep your teams aligned, provide better visibility and maintain a continuous feedback loop so you can spend less time reporting and more time innovating.

What You’ll Learn:

1.       How to identify the extended collaboration circle of product delivery in your organization. Who are the personas, both upstream and downstream, with a voice on your project? Beyond your team of peers and managers, are you in sync with customers? With your development and QA teams?

2.       The importance of bridging the gap among different personas so you can streamline your work and run projects more efficiently. You’ll gain valuable tips for eliciting, validating, approving requirements and project details, as well as ideas for more continuous feedback loops to minimize the impact of change.

3.       How to use modern requirements management tools to keep everyone in the collaboration circle looped in on all the key discussion, decisions and input about the product delivery process. You’ll be confident in your ability to meet expectations when they are all clearly communicated and agreed upon.

By bringing in your stakeholders early and often, you can slay the productivity-killing monsters that wreak havoc on your job, such as:.

·         The 11th hour swoop-in. Don’t you love when an executive comes to you at the last minute with some critical feedback you asked for weeks ago

·         Decision recollection disorder. Isn’t it fun to revisit decisions months later? Don’t you love trying to prove who decided what, when and why, even six months after the fact?

·         CYA Syndrome. Can you trace the final feature set back to the original business objective? No? Can you explain why?

·         The Missing Vault. Remember that one person who knew everything? Who left the company? How can you tap into all that intelligence?

·         Mismatched expectations. Ever had a product you drove met with a resounding “meh.”? Or find out after the fact that so and so was expecting x, y, and z instead of q, r, s.

·         Missing pieces. Does everyone on your team even know enough about what your product actually does to make sound decisions on the fly?
